End of Month Luncheon

Thank you to all those parents who came to Open House! Kathy Zinn has volunteered to be our Homeroom Mother for Room 71, along with he help of Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Wood. We are still in need of a Homeroom Mother for Room 73. If you would like to fill this volunteer position, please contact Mrs. Whitelaw.

Our first End of Month Luncheon is this Friday at 11:30. Please sign the slip that is coming home today to let us know if you are coming.

We are thoroughly enjoying Maniac Magee. We have practiced Shared Reading, and really work well as a group. Mr. Gibbons is having a blast reading Poppy at the end of the day.

Our first Spelling test is Monday. Words can be found in the planner as well as on the right side of the blog.

Mr. Gibbons is enjoying Calendar Math a lot with Mrs. Whitelaw. It is a fun and interesting way to learn new math concepts.

Have a great week, and hopefully we will see you Friday!

**Note: Please do not wear large earrings to school as they are a safety hazard.

A Relaxing Friday

After about 6 tornado warnings, it seemed safe to go outside. There was very little if any damage. I was suprised to see how far Lake Gibbo had risen. This canoe used to sit on dry land. The lake actually took over about 10 feet of my yard.

Franky and Thelma took a walk outside after being cooped up inside for most of the day.

I got a chance to do some reading, as well as catch up on the Olympics. I am glad they will be over soon. They have kept me up late for over two weeks. I'm addicted to the Olympics. My favorite events were Beach Volleyball and Basketball. I cheer for the U.S.A., but I really don't care who wins. I just love sports!

OPEN HOUSE

Open House is next Tuesday August 26 at 6:30 p.m.

First Day

Well...our first day is done, only 179 more to go. We covered our rituals and routines for Reader's Workshop, and we chose our first Independent reading book. Tomorrow we will begin working from the text book, as well as our first class novel, Maniac Magee. Maniac Magee was written by Jerry Spinelli, and he is our author study for the year, and will help us meet part of the Reading Standards.

We will begin our first writing pieces on Tuesday!

Hopefully you noticed the yellow form inside your child's planner. This form is to be signed every night indicating that your chld has read for 30 minutes. I prefer that they read the independent reading book they chose in class, but any literature will be sufficient.

Please turn in all forms from the folder that came home as soon as possible. You will be receiving a call from me over the next few days to make sure that the phone numbers are correct.

Here are some pictures from our first day: (notice the smiles)
