Louey The Snake

Today we captured a vicious little critter outside Mrs. Hosch's classroom. The kids begged to see it, and I said NO! He was not very friendly! He was not taught manners at home. I told them I would post his pictures on the blog! If you know what kind of snake it is, let us know.

We started Crash today, and everyone seemed to be quite intrigued by Crash and Penn Webb. Jerry Spinelli rocks!

Progress Reports went home today, and are due back by Thursday. After Thursday, a $1 (Gibbo dollar) a day fine will be imposed.

The Ape Authors & STAR Student!

We presented our Scary Stories to the class today. Now some students know what it is like to be published. Mrs. Peck and I are very proud of the hard work that came from Rooms 71 and 73 over the last few weeks. Look for SCARY STORIES FROM ROOM 71 on bookshelves by the end of October. Great job APES!

We will finish Maniac Magee and Poppy on Friday. We thoroughly enjoyed both novels and will be counting them towards our 50 Book Count!
By now, your child should have read at least 4 books on their own. If they have not, they will be spending their End of Month Luncheon in another room! End of Month Luncheon is our chance to present to our parents, and to celebrate our accomplishments.

End of Month Luncheon

If you do not receive an invitation, it is because your child has not met his or her reading goal, and is not invited to the luncheon. Your child must have four books read by Friday.

We will be reviewing September's reading and writing, looking ahead to October's goals, as well as celebrating our STAR Students!

See you there! Please do not come unless you recieved an invitation.

VOLCANOES

Our story out of the textbook this week is about volcanoes. We had quite an interesting and lively discussion about the city of Pompeii and what happened there many many years ago. We also talked at length about Mount Saint Helen's in Washington State. here are some pictures of Mt. St. Helen's, Kilauea, and Mount Vesuvius. (Pompeii)

Progress Reports

Our first progress report went home on Friday. They are due back no later that Tuesday the 16th. Any student who does not have it back by Tuesday will be assessed a $1.00 a day fee. (that's Gibbo Dollars)

We had our first STORE day on Friday, and many students got to spend some of their money on treats. Any student who came to school with his or her Read & Respond form unsigned was not allowed to shop. A few students chose to save all their money. Some have chosen to deposit their cash into the Gibbo Bank....wise choice!

We had our first Selection Test on the story Earthquake Terror this past Friday. We did awesome, the average score was in the 80's. The lowest score was a 65, and 10 students scored a 100%.

We are well on our way to finishing our first writing project "Scary Stories". They will be posted on the bulletin board outside Room 71 and 73 over the next few weeks, as well as on the Gibbon/Whitelaw Writing blog, thewritingapes.blogspot.com.

Maniac Magee

We are about two thirds of the way through Maniac and we are enjoying it immensely. Today we learned what polka music sounds like. We also learned how to do the polka. This is Earl Grayson's favorite music. Who is Earl Grayson you ask? Ask your child about Earl. They know.

The music playing is polka music! It is the traditional folk music of Poland.

Here the Peck Polka is practiced

Reading is RELAXING!

Matilda and Woody modeling good Partner Reading

Dylan and Savanna bathing in good literature

Who knew that READING could be so much fun!

We began our Guided Reading groups this week. We will be working in these groups 3-4 times a week to strenghten weaknesess and and improve our strong points. Here Mrs. Peck works on using context clues to figure out the meaning of words.

Mr. Liberty was overcome with emotion at the turn of events in Maniac Magee

Baby Ruth

For Your Information:
The Baby Ruth Candy bar was named after the daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt. Most people believe it was named after Babe Ruth. Congratulations to those students who got it right.

Ruth Cleveland, known to the public as "Baby Ruth", died of diphtheria at age 12. She was adored by the media and the public.

Ruth Cleveland 1891-1904

Whatever happened to the Mars Bar? Ask your child! We had Mars Bars in class. You can't buy a Mars bar anymore......but they are still available! Ask a Whitelaw Ape or Gibbon Ape student how you can get one!

Read & Feed

The Book Fair is here!
Beauclerc's annual Read & Feed is scheduled for Thursday! Please turn in all dinner orders by the end of the day on Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for families to sit down and eat together and shop for some books at the Book Fair! Most of the proceeds are pumped back into the school. While shopping at the Book Fair, you may also donate a book to Room 71 or 73!

WE ROCK!
Also, The Room 71 Gibbon Apes won a pizza party from the incredibly awesome Beauclerc P.T.A. We sold the most Entertainment books in the school. Thanks to all of you who bought them or sold them. It was for a good cause. Winning that pizza party is a testanet tomwhat incredible parents we have in room 71 nad 73! I also think we have 100% P.T.A. memebership, thanks to those folks who bought more than one memebership! If you haven't joined please do it soon!

Have a great weekend!

Congratulatins to Karson Lewis and Cristian Torres! They are the Star Students for The Gibbons and Whitelaw Apes. They have both worked hard all week, and set a good example for their classmates.

We were well represented at Skate Station. We had the most students in fifth grade show up to support the PTA, and the second most in the school. We rock! We have also sold the most Entertainment coupon books in the school. This is a testament to the incredible parents of Room 71 and 73.

We started our "Scary Stories" writing project today, and I can't wait to see the finished projects in a week or two.

This week we were also introduced to Earl Grayson, a character in Maniac Magee. He is an incredbly naive but good hearted man. Hopefully, your children will learn something from him. We have been reading a lot in Rooms 71 & 73! We are well on our way to 50 Books! Why are we reading 50 books? Because we can!

We are glad to have Derek and Lauren back. We missed you!

Don't forget: Speling Test on Monday!

It's that time again! Go Jags & Pats!
