Happy Passover!

~Passover, a Jewish holiday, starts at sundown next Friday!  What is Passover?

Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, had made a law that every boy baby of the Hebrew race should be killed, and there was great sorrow because of it. But when Moses was born, his mother managed to hide him for three months; then she made a cradle, or little ark, and putting him into it, carried him down to a river and hid the cradle among the reeds there.

Soon after this, Pharaoh's daughter came with her maidens to the river-side, and when she saw the beautiful child, she sent one of her maidens to bring it to her.
She took the little boy to the palace and named him Moses, and he became a great man among the Egyptians; he knew, however, that he belonged to the Hebrew race, and when he saw how badly his own people were treated, he tried to help them; but at last he was obliged to leave Egypt, and became a shepherd, taking care of the flocks of a priest called Jethro. He also married Jethro's daughter.

After a time, God spoke to Moses out of a burning bush, and told him that he must go and rescue his people from the cruel Egyptians. Moses thought he could not do this; but God promised to help him, and to show him what he would be able to do with that help, God turned the rod which Moses carried into a serpent. Then God told Moses to pick the serpent up by the tail, and as he did so, it became a rod again. He showed him another sign, also; but Moses was still afraid, because he could not talk well and thought that Pharaoh would not listen to him. So God told him to take his brother Aaron for a spokesman.

Moses and Aaron, therefore, went into Egypt, where they called together the chief men among their own people, the Hebrews, or Israelites, and told them what God had commanded. Moses also did the miracles which God had given him power to do, and the people believed that God had sent him.
After this Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, and told him that it was the Lord's command that he should let the Israelites go. Pharaoh knew nothing about God, and became very angry, saying that Moses and Aaron kept the people from their work by telling them such things; and he treated the poor Israelites worse than before.

But Moses had faith in God; so he was able to perform before the king the wonderful things that he had done before his own people; still, Pharaoh would not let the children of Israel go.

Then Moses turned the waters of the rivers into blood; and after that he caused large numbers of frogs to run over the land and through the houses, doing great harm. He also brought locusts and other insects to be a pest to the people, and caused many of the useful animals which belonged to the Egyptians to grow sick and die, doing all these wonders with the rod which God had given him. But Pharaoh would not listen to him.  These plagues did not effect the Jews, they had been told to mark their doors with lamb's blood, and the plagues would "pass over" them.

Then God commanded Moses again, and he brought other plagues upon the Egyptians; but Pharaoh would not give up.

At last, however, God sent a still more terrible trouble; for the first-born of every Egyptian family, and even the first-born among their flocks, died; although the Israelites, who were constantly praying to the Lord and making sacrifices, were spared, as they had been all the time.

Then Pharaoh was frightened into obeying God, and he let the Israelites go; so they started at once for the land of Canaan, and the Lord guided them by a cloud, which at night looked like a pillar of fire.

When the Israelites had reached the Red Sea, they found that Pharaoh was pursuing them with a large army. But God commanded Moses to stretch forth his rod over the sea; he did so, and the waters parted, making a high wall upon either side, so that the children of Israel passed through and reached the other side in safety. Pharaoh and his hosts followed and were all drowned.
When the children of Israel saw that they were safe, they sang a beautiful song of praise to God, and then they went on their way again.

After they had traveled for some time, they were in need of bread and meat, and they complained about Moses because he had brought them to a land where they had not enough to eat. But God sent them plenty of quails and also a substance which they could use for bread. Later, when they wanted water, the Lord commanded Moses, and he struck a rock with his rod, and pure water poured out of it, so that the thirsty people and their animals had all that they wanted.
In this way God took care of them as they journeyed through the new and strange country toward the promised land, and Moses became the law-giver of the Israelites, receiving his commandments from God.

What a week!

~What did we learn this week?  We learned about President Franklin Roosevelt and how he never got to see the Allies Victory, he died a few months before V.E. Day.  We learned about how American never really knew that he was in a wheelchair.  We found out a lot about his Vice President who became President after his death, Harry. S. Truman.  Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war.  It caused hundred of thousand of deaths, but in the long run it saved millions of Japanese and American lives.  What a tough decision to make.  He also introduced the Truman Doctrine, which said the USA would help most countries who were against Communism.  This doctrine was very successful in places like Korea, but was a failure in places like Vietnam and Afghanistan.

~We also learned about Prohibition, and how at one time all alcohol, wine, and beer were illegal in the United States and how it led to bootlegging and gangsters who became rich from illegal liquor and beer.  Al Capone was one notorious gangster who became rich and infamous from selling illegal alcohol.

~We learned about satire and fables and morals.  Many APES cannot wait to read Animal Farm when they get to middle school.

~In reading, Max's father was released from prison, and kidnapped Max.  Is the name Killer Kane appropriate?  He seems to really care for Max.  Were Grim and Gram lying to Max all along?  We'll find out more when we get back on Monday!

~We finished Loser, by Jerry Spinelli!  What a great book!  What will you do when you run into a Donald Zinkoff in middle school?  Will you laugh at him?  Will you welcome him?

~Mr. G starts a new read-a-loud on Monday!  The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Patersen!  Gilly is a child who is sent from foster home to foster home...and she is angry!  She has a rotten mouth and a rotten attitude!  Will she change...or will she continue to sabotage herself?

APE SMACKDOWN!

~Mr. G and Mrs. Goody both lost about 5 pound a each today at the APE SMACKDOWN!  We played roughly 40 games against teams of 3-4 Apes.  We only lost twice!!!!!!!!  The teams below won....why?  They worked as a team and PASSED the ball.  No ball hogs on these teams!
Are they rubbing their victory in our faces?

We're #2

WIld Adventures

~Please be on the lookout for your child's End of Year Trip permission slip to Wild Adventures in Valdosta, GA on June 5th.  This park is more of a high end traditional amusement park.  Lines are never long...and there are tons of rides for the fearless and the fearful, and prices for food in the park are very reasonable.  The price of the entire trip, luxury Coach bus included is $55.  This price also includes the Grade 5 Cookout after the Grade Five Awards the following day.  The original cost of the trip had to be adjusted due to the increase in gas prices.
~For parents driving up on their own, the cost is $30.
~For students with season passes to Wild Adventures, the cost of the bus is $25.
~All student MUST ride the bus.
~The approximate mileage from Beaulcerc to Wild Adventures is 125 miles, that would be 250 miles round trip.  It would probably be cheaper to ride the bus than drive.... unless you carpool with a group of parents.
~Any APE parents that attends the trip, WILL NOT be asked to chaperon any student other than their own....unless they want to take a friend of their own child.  Mrs. Goodman and Mr. Gibbons will chaperon those without a parent attending.
~All students must meet the District goal of 25 Books.
~Any student who receives a referral between now and the time of the trip will not be allowed to go.
~The busses leave at 7:45 AM, and it waits for nobody!
~The busses leave Valdosta at 5:45.
~NO Beauclerc student is allowed in the water park at any time during our visit.
~School dress code will be enforced!  All APES must wear their class shirt.
~I believe referral was misspelled on the permission slip...sorry!

Jacksonville Public Library Sale

~Hopefully, some of you got to go the Jacksonville Public Library Book Sale.  It was pretty cool.  You get to fill a whole paper shopping back with as many books as you can fit inside...for $10!  Mr. G scored almost 50 books for $20!  I will try to find out when the next book sale is and post it on here.  They do this about 3 times a year to make room for new books.  I saw a few former Apes browsing through the books.
