December's Luncehon

Dear Parents,

December's Luncheon on the 13th is for students only.  Do not send in desserts as they have already been provided.  You may send in small treats for the stockings that Santa left for the Apes.

What have we learned?

~Today in Number the Stars we found out the Annemarie's friend Ellen is Jewish.  The Hirsch family has disappeared and we inferred they are probably hiding.  The Nazis are beginning to dehumanize the Jews by closing Jewish owned businesses.  Lise dies a week before she was to marry Peter.  Mama and Papa will not talk about Lise.... we think because it is too painful and will bring up bad memories.

~In Social Studies, we learned that The United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in 1945 to speed up the end of World War II.  Hundred of thousands died, but most historians agree that it saved million of lives in the long run.  No country has used atomic or nuclear weapons since.

~VE Day is Victory over Europe Day.  VJ day is Victory Over Japan Day.

~The United States learned a valuable lesson from the Treaty of Versailles.  When you are the victor (winner) you do not punish and humiliate the loser like France and England did to Germany at the end of the Great war (WWI).  The Unites States pumped millions and millions of dollars and men into Japan and Germany after the war to rebuild both countries.  The results are that Japan and Germany are two of America's best and most trusted allies today!

Christmas Stockings!

~In case you did not know, Mr. Gibbons and Mrs. Goodman know Santa Claus fairly well.  This year, he actually gave us a bag of stockings for the Apes who have met their December reading Goal of 18 books.  Santa told us that he will be too busy this year to drop by and fill the Ape stocking with goodies.  He asked that Ape parents send in small goodies to fill up the stockings.  Send in enough goodies for the 21 kids in your child's homeroom.  Please do not purchase expensive items...... The Dollar store is a great place to find stocking items.  You should spend no more than $5.  Great ideas are pencils, candy, microwave popcorn, erasers, lollipops, etc. etc etc.  Santa was clear about one thing though.... those APES who DO NOT reach their reading Goal..... Do not get a stocking until they DO meet the goal!

Skate Station

Mrs. Goodman and Mr. Gibbons will both be at Skate Station from 5:00 - 7:00 tonight!  Need to do some Christmas shopping?  Drop 'em off and pick 'em up at 7!  All profits from this fundraiser go directly to Beauclerc's PTA!

Good Luck Ms. Ashley

~Good Luck to Ms. Ashley!  Thursday was her last day with us...as she moves on in college and becomes a teacher!

Number the Stars

~Reminder: tomorrow 11-28-12 is an Early Release day!

~Happy Birthday to Tessa and Cameron!

~We met Annemarie and Ellen, our two main characters in Number the Stars!  We met them racing on the streets of Copenhagen during WWII.  They were stopped by Nazi soldiers for acting suspicious.  Two 12 year old girls running on the streets looked suspicious?  We also learned a little bit about the Danish Resistance and how they made life very difficult for the Nazis (Germans) during the occupation of Denmark.  Kisrti seems to be the only one who is not bothered by the soldiers.  I wonder why?

~The picture above is an actual picture of King Christian X riding on his horse, Jubilee, many children would follow the King on their bikes.  The second picture is an actual copy of the Resistance newspaper DE FRIE DANSKE (The Free Danes).  The regular newspapers were full of news the Nazis wanted you to know (lies).  the Resistance newspaper was full of mostly truths.
