Thanks for coming!

~Thanks to all the parents that came out today to join the Apes for lunch!  We enjoyed your company and your kid appreciated your support.  A special thanks to the anonymous donor for today's luncheon!  What makes it special is that someone made a donation and looked for NO CREDIT or RECOGNITION.  Whoever did this, thank you for setting a good example for all the Apes! Thanks to Briley's Mom & Dad, Raha's Mom, and Kylie's Dad for supplying dessert for us!  You folks rock!  Scroll down for more pictures!  Also, a big thanks to Mr. Goodman for bringing lunch for us!

AR Point Clubs

~Wow!  the Apes have been incredibly busy reading novel after novel.  Last year, we did not have any Apes reach 50 points until after Thanksgiving!  Once our pictures come in, Apes can use their Accelerated Reader IDs to retrieve awesome prizes!  To see AR Point Club Prizes click on TAB above!

Writing Project 1

~We finally published our first writing project today!  Students were asked to tell the story (narrative) of Maniac and Grayson.  Who are these two people?  Stop by the bulletin board outside Room 71 and find out!  We focused heavily on sequence of events, transitions, and producing engaging beginnings to "grab" the reader.  The Apes did a real nice job honoring Grayson in this writing piece.  We have some awesome writers at Beauclerc!

~Thanks to these Apes, who prepared the work folders to present to the parents of 71 and 73 at September's Luncheon.

Meet Gilly Hopkins!

~We started our second novel today!  We met our main character Galadriel (Gilly). WOW, what an angry girl!  This is the story of a foster child who is missing the mother that she really does not know or understand.  Raha and Tessa performed the lead role and were quite animated with their vocabulary!  Below are the 7 different covers of The Great Gilly Hopkins.  Which one do you like the most?   Which Gilly looks the most like the Gilly you imagined in your head?

Maniac Magee Song - Connections

Goodbye Maniac!

~We finished Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli today!  It was awesome, as we closed the last page, the class broke into applause!    We met some awesome characters such as Jeffrey, Earl, Piper, Russell, Mars Bar, Amanda and Mr. McNab!  We learned a lot about character and sequence of events in this great Newberry Medal winning book.  Can't wait to get into our next Spinelli book!  Our read aloud, also a Spinelli book, is almost completed as well!  Our next novel is about a foul mouthed girl, Gilly Hopkins, is who sent from foster home to foster home while she waits for her famous and beautiful mother to come get her!

Happy Birthday Buster!

~Happy Birthday Josh!  Thanks to his Mom, we had some awesome treats!  Josh donated 4 of the leftovers to be auctioned off...they sold for $48..... WOW!

Word Origins

~Today we talked about how many words in English come from the Latin and Greek language.  We learned that quadr comes from Latin and means four and ped comes from Latin and Greek  and means foot.  Once we knew these roots we figured a whole bunch of word meanings such as pedestrian, quadrangle, pedicure etc.  We also learned how Latin was the language of the Roman Empire, and is now considered a dead language (not used by anyone).

Something rotten at the McNab Household

~We got back into our regular novel routine Thursday and Friday after many days of Benchmark testing and MAP testing!  We discovered that not only is the McNab house filthy disgusting and rotten, their minds and beliefs are also pretty rotten.  Maniac decided that the ideas that were coming from the McNab household were even more rotten than the filth inside.  He has chosen to stay in hopes of saving the young minds of Russell and Piper!  He hasn't helped himself any on the East side after beating Mars bar in a race.  The sad thing was that Maniac lost control if himself and humiliated Mars Bar in front of his own people.  Surely, this will mean bad things for Maniac.

STAR Student 9-21-12
