Students were asked to respond to the following statement and question:
Annemarie and Kirsti react very differently to the soldiers on the street. How are their reactions different, and why are their reactions different? Students had to recognize that it was a two part question and had to pull evidence from the text to support their assertions.

Matt's response scored high for the following reasons:
~He restates the question (paragraph 1) in an engaging manner.
~He answers both parts of the question correctly and (paragraphs 2 & 3) pulls numerous pieces of evidence from the text to support his answers. His responses are engaging and there is an obvious beginning, middle and ending to his response.
~There are very few spelling and grammar mistakes.
~His closing paragraph (#4) lets me know that he is done and he adds a personal touch as well.
