Social Studies Connections: Boston in the 1770's

~We are learning about many of the causes that led to the American Revolution!  Did you know that the Boston Massacre was used as propaganda to move many colonists to the side of the Patriot cause?  The victims were not young boys as the newspapers reported.  Two of the victims were seventeen, the rest were older than 17.   All 8 soldiers who were tried for the murder of the 5 victims, all were found NOT GUILTY.  Did you know that John Adams defended the eight men?  Yes! The same John Adams who would go on to become the second President of the United States.
~Did you know that Boston Tea Party was anything but a party?  It was carried out in secrecy in the middle of the night by Englishmen dressed as Native Americans.  Today we talked about propaganda and how it used to persuade people to one side or another of a debate.  This falls right into what we are learning in reading! AUTHOR'S PURPOSE (Persuade)
~The pictures above are what appeared in Boston newspapers the following days of both events.  the pictures are hardly accurate as to the truth of what happened.  The author's of these articles, and artists behind the drawings definitely had a purpose.  They were trying to persuade the readers to support the cause of revolution!  No more taxation without representation!
