~Life is getting more tragic for Shmuel. His grandfather is missing, and he is getting skinnier by the day. Bruno is starting to figure out a few things. Lieutenant Kotler gets meaner and more evil by the day. Will the Commandant figure out his motives?

~Each Ape, must have 21 books read for February's Luncheon on the 28th.

~All Universal Studios money must be turned in by March 24th (cash only), no exceptions! That means you have 6 weeks to save up! Yahoooo.... can't wait. Any fifth grader who receives a discipline referral between now and June 9th, will not be allowed on the trip.

~We have ordered 2011 Ape shirts! they are awesome. This year we are going with orange shirt and a brown and white Ape. Each student will get one, the cost is $5 each. They will go on sale February 18 for both Ape classes.

~Beauclerc is soooooo PROUD! Ms. Burns, one of our awesome kindergarten teachers was selected as a FINALIST for Duval County Teacher of the Year for 2011! We can't wait to cheer her on at the Eddy Awards in March! we were all excited to hear the new! many of her former students wanted to go say Congratulations to her today!

Janusz Korczak

~As I told you in class, Janusz Korczak was know as the Dr. Seuss of Poland. His most famous novel was King Matt the First. The flag of King Matt was a white field with a shamrock on it. The Korczak orphans actually marched to the trains at Stawki Station carrying the flag of King Matt before they were gassed at Treblinka Death Camp.

~Coach Dizzo came by today.... it was raining out. We had a blast stacking cups and knocking them down! It was a lot of fun!

~We had a great time today celebrating Mrs. Pickles birthday! We made ice cream sundaes and just a had a regular good old time! Happy Birthday Mrs. Pickles! Big thanks to Mrs. Pritchard and Mrs. Bergeron fro helping out today!

Writing Assessment

~Today we took our 4th Writing Assessment for Duval County.

Goosebumps and Stamina

~It was awesome today to walk around from different groups and partners to hear the Apes reading and putting into practice everything we learn at "the rug". I got goosebumps seeing them helping each other and using different voices for different characters. They are truly understanding what is going on at "Outwith". We spend a good deal of our time actually reading instead of talking about reading and our stamina is incredible. FCAT will be no problem! I was proud of the Apes today!

Connection Section

~Our novel is really getting dark. Shmuel is really beginning to show the effects of sickness and starvation. He is getting skinnier and paler by the day. Pavel, the cook, is also showing signs of his body breaking down. He is having a hard time serving the Commandant's family without falling. Today he spilled wine on Lieutenant Kotler, and paid a heavy price. Kotler was actually mad because the Commandant is starting to figure out that Kotler's father was "UnGerman". Below is an actual picture of the fence at Auschwitz (Outwith). Below the fence are picture of actors who portrayed Pavel, Bruno, and Kotler in the movie..... which was not nearly as good as the book.

~Thanks to all the parents who came out for our End of Month Luncheon! We had more pizza than we could eat! We worked hard in January, and those who met their reading goal of 17 books were rewarded! The goal for February is 21 Books!
