Esperanza Rising

 ~We were introduced to our new novel today, Esperanza Rising.  We learned some important background information about the setting of this piece of historical fiction.  Today we worked smarter not harder and did the work in teams and then shared it with our classmates! 

Scholastic Book Club

We have an online Scholastic Book Club and the first order is due September 30th!  You may use the link on the right to access the website and sign your child up and place orders!  Our class code is NFP7G or you may look it up under Mrs. Goodman's name.  Please check out the book choices online, there is usually more to offer.  You can also pay online rather than sending a check with your child.  If you cannot shop online you may write a check payable to Scholastic Reading Club not to San Pablo Elementary.  I do believe things move a bit faster when ordered online!  Happy shopping and reading!

Swim America 2016

~Permission slips for Swim America went home today!  No Gibbons or Goodman Apes will be allowed into the Fetcher pool area without a signed permission slip.  If you were absent on Tuesday, please see Mr. Gibbons onWednesday!

Working with COMPLEX TEXT

 ~We have been working hard on  dissecting and interpreting complex and difficult text in class. We have been working with our discussion groups to figure out what the authors meant when they wrote this document (UHDR).  We have also been discussing some of the global tragedies that made the Universal Declaration of Human Rights necessary.  Did you know that in some countries and cultures you do not get to choose who you marry?  In some places girls as young as 10 and 11 are being married off by their families.  In some countries, the government can just come and take your property away.  In some countries you must practice a certain religion. Again, WE ARE GLAD WE LIVE IN THE USA!

Acting Out In Class!

There are more ways than one to define a word.  Today we acted out some of the more difficult vocabulary words from our Close read of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.....and it was quite fun!

Creating Timelines!

 ~We created timelines during work-time to better understand why the United Nations needed to create a document laying out rights that all human being should be entitled to. We discussed in detail how the Holocaust led to international outrage and disgust and ow this document would rally the nations of the world to defend the victims of such brutality in the future.

Clubs

Club Registrations are Aug. 31 from 5:30-7:30 PM! & Sept. 1 from 5:30-7:30 PM!!  All clubs are first come first served!  Flyers went home describing all the clubs.  If you need another one just stop by the office before the end of the day on Monday.

Chinese Students protest for their own "Bill of Rights"

The Bill of Rights

 ~We are working hard on annotating text and learning about the Bill of Rights.  Who knew that this document could actually be interesting and exciting.  We learned about countries such as China, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and others where people do not have the same rights as us.  We really take the Boll of Rights for granted sometimes.  We learned about what happened in Tiananmen Square, China 25 years ago.... where thousand of people lost their lives because they protested for more rights. We also learned about Saudi Arabia where it is illegal for some to vote or drive.  Sure glad we live in the U.S.A.!
