Yom Kippur begins at sundown

Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement, falls on the eve of the tenth day of Tishrei. That’s when the fast begins too. It’s a big one… twenty-five+ hours!. This year (2008), Yom Kippur starts at sundown, Wednesday, October 8th, and ends Thursday evening, October 9th with the sound of the Shofar.

It is the holiest and most solemn day of the year, a day of fasting and prayers, and is only celebrated one day everywhere. (Could you imagine having to fast two days in a row?). Enjoy your holiday Evan and Derek! Maybe you can share some Yom Kippur information with the class....tell us what it is all about.


Is anyone ever going to guess the Blast from the past? Hint: his first name begins with D. Many guesses but nobody has been close...try 2002-2004.

CRASH

We started reading CRASH by Jerry Spinelli last week as part of our author study of Mr. Spinelli. We are enjoying it much more that any of us had anticipated. We spent the first week reading the novel as if it was a play, with each student taking on the roll of the characters. It was incredible. It was also helpful for some students identifying voice change using indentations, and quotations. We are falling in love with Penn and identifying with his right to be different.

While we were talking about Crash and Mike's treatment of Penn, we discussed how we would treat someone different than us. We decided to wear two different socks as an act of support for Penn. Can you guess who the socks belong to??

Relaxing Sunday

What a relaxing Sunday. I spent the afternoon working in my yard, and out of nowhere this bird appeared. It did not seem to be afraid of me at all. Even my dogs did not scare it away. Does anyone know what type of bird this is?

What an AWESOME Friday!

Room 71 Golden Skate Award winners! We helped raise money for PTA. Thanks to Lauren/s mom for volunteering at the desk! STAR STUDENT

Congratulations to Evan McCance and Griffin Foley. They are the October 3rd STAR Students for Rooms 71 & 73. Way to go guys! Mrs. Whitelaw and Mr. Gibbons are proud of you!

Congratulations to the two most popular teams (and Mr. Gibbons favorites too) in the APE classrooms, the Tampa Rays and the Boston Red Sox, they both won their first playoff games!

What is so embarrassing?

We started our second narrative writing project for this year. Students are being asked to write a narrative about something that has happened to them that was embarrassing. Today we worked on our Story LEADS. It is amazing to see the growth from their first projects. Each student presented their lead today as if it was an advertisement for a movie. They were great!

Awewsome haircut Evan!

We had our first auction today. It was amazing to see how high the bidding would go for a pack of football cards. Some decided not to get involved with the bidding wars, and save their money. Karson (football cards), Madison (pumpkin), Dylan (football cards), Antonio (pencil pack), Noah (pencil pack) and Ashely (the candy fan)walked away with the big prizes. Don't forget to save your money students, the store will be open next Friday!

FLAG RAISING

Flag Raising was awesome! Thanks to the chorus for an awesome rendition of our National Anthem and our school song. Mr. Sofferin and Mrs. Hartless had an awesome idea to make the flag raising a little more exciting. Great job guys! Our very own Matt DaSilva was chosen as the Fifth Grade Student of the Month!
