Rest in Peace Mr. Grayson

~Sadly, one of our characters has passed away. Earl Grayson, the park attendant in Two Mills, PA has passed away. His life was a tough one, growing up with parents who didn't care, going to school where teachers didn't care, and spending almost 20 years in the minor leagues. He never made it to the big leagues, and his only claim to fame was striking out Willie Mays on his last day before he went on to become one of the greatest players of all time. In the last year of his life he found a kid who was homeless and close to death (Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee). He nursed him back to health and sort of became the father Maniac has longed to have. A few days after Christmas, hie first "real" Christmas, he passed away in his sleep.

~Maniac lost his parents at age 3 a famous trolley wreck, he then spent 8 years in a home full of hate (Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan). He ran away to become part of the Beale family, only to have to run from them to save them from harm that some on the east side of town wanted to cause him. He finally found true happiness when he found Earl Grayson. Now, Earl is dead. Maniac is giving up. He goes to Valley Forge in the middle of winter and finds a lonely cold cabin where he goes inside, and curls up in a corner to die. As death from the cold approaches, two little annoying urchins stumble upon him. Will they be enough to make him want to live? Read on to find out!

Making Inferences

~We are learning about inferences this week. Many times, an author will let you decide on a character and what kind of person they are. Jerry Spinelli never told us that Mike DeLuca was a bully and not a nice person. He let us come to that decision on our own by the things that Mike did and said. Good readers are constantly making inferences based on our experiences and connections and what makes sense. Some of the time our inferences are wrong, and we make new inferences. What inferences can you make about the picture below?

Early Release

~There were quite a few students not picked up by 2:00 today sitting in front of the school. I hope none of them were Gibbons or Goodman Apes! Also, if your child is a car rider, please pick them up in the car pool lane. We noticed a few kids jumping into cars on the street on Tuesday! This is not safe, and those children will not be allowed to go with the walkers anymore, they will have to go to the car riders area. If you do not like waiting in the car pool lane, come between 3:10 and 3:20. the line is a lot shorter after 3:10.

~We are well into The Elf of Union Square and we are beginning to see how rotten and mean Hiram really can be.
kicking back and enjoying a good story!

Ape Store

~We opened the Ape Store for the first time today! many of the Apes decided to spend some of their earnings! Some decided to save their Ape Dollars for bigger and better things. Remember Apes: You need 10 Ape dollars to go the luncheon on the 3oth! Thanks to Hannah for operating the store and giving out receipts.

Tall Tales with the Apes

~We started our new word study today! Our focus this week is on tall tales. We learned about Paul Bunyan and John Henry. We also learned that tall tales are usually (generalization) based on real people. We listened to the famous song "The Ballad of John Henry" by Johnny Cash.

Ballad of John Henry's Hammer by Johnny Cash

A fun Johnny Cash song:

The Elf of Union Square

~We started reading The Elf of Union Square today! Hiram is a hoot! He is cranky, mean, sarcastic and downright miserable. Needless to day, he is alone! He cannot stand to see others enjoying life around him in the park, and is determined to ruin everyone's day!

Happy Birthday Abey

US History

~Today we learned why we call the continent America and not Columbia. Someone else was given credit for discovering the new world. We learned what happened to all the Spanish explorers that came after Columbus, who actually went by the name Cristobal Colon. We also learned how the search for gold led many explorers to mistreat the local tribes. There are no known painting of Columbus that show what he actually looked like. All painting of Columbus out there are just guesses! We also learned why we call the sea to the southeast of the United States, the Caribbean Sea... after the Carib Indians.
