*He drew the inaccurate picture of the Boston Massacre which was used as propaganda.
*He outlived all of his 16 children, except one, Mary.
*He was born Paul Rivoire (He was French), and changed it to the more English sounding Revere.
*His house still stands today!
*The town next to Boston is named after him, Revere, Massachusetts.
*He was a silversmith, painter, dentist, soldier, author, bell maker, and politician...among other things
*He never made it to Concord to warn that the British were coming, Samuel Prescott was the one!

Social Studies Connections: Boston in the 1770's
~We are learning about many of the causes that led to the American Revolution! Did you know that the Boston Massacre was used as propaganda to move many colonists to the side of the Patriot cause? The victims were not young boys as the newspapers reported. Two of the victims were seventeen, the rest were older than 17. All 8 soldiers who were tried for the murder of the 5 victims, all were found NOT GUILTY. Did you know that John Adams defended the eight men? Yes! The same John Adams who would go on to become the second President of the United States.
~Did you know that Boston Tea Party was anything but a party? It was carried out in secrecy in the middle of the night by Englishmen dressed as Native Americans. Today we talked about propaganda and how it used to persuade people to one side or another of a debate. This falls right into what we are learning in reading! AUTHOR'S PURPOSE (Persuade)

~The pictures above are what appeared in Boston newspapers the following days of both events. the pictures are hardly accurate as to the truth of what happened. The author's of these articles, and artists behind the drawings definitely had a purpose. They were trying to persuade the readers to support the cause of revolution! No more taxation without representation!

Maniac Updates!
~We are well on our way into Maniac Magee, one of Mr. G's favorite novels! Maniac became an orphan at age 3 and was sent to live with an aunt and uncle who hated each other. He decided it would be better to live on the street than to live amongst all that hate. He runs for over a year and winds up in Two Mills, pennsylvania. He befriended a young Black girl (Amanda) and moves right in with her family. They love Maniac (Jeffrey).... but not everyone in the Black side of town is thrilled to have hime there! The Cobra Gang and John McNab have already run him out of the White side of town......will he be able to stay with Amanda? We are really watching the plot unfold in the first 15 chapters!
