~Today we read the poem Walking Through Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. We recognized that many poets use symbolism and metaphor to say what they are feeling. It was awesome to watch 10 & 11 year olds argue about what Robert Frost meant with certain phrases and words. We went from an old man who is getting ready to die to a soldier returning from war, to a reference of Mary and Joseph ring a donkey to Bethlehem..... among others. The purpose of the exercise was not to get it right..... but to look at how others see things and open our minds to the fact that someone else may be right..... and that even though our ideas and thoughts might be different than other people's... it doesn't mean that we are wrong.....and it doesn't mean that others are wrong because their thoughts are different from ours.
~Robert Frost never told anyone what this poem was REALLY about...therefore... we were all right depending on our own experiences and backgrounds.
Below are pictures of each group trying to figure out who HE is in the poem, and what promises have to be kept, along with a few other interesting metaphors.
