Milkweed
~Our novel is really taking a turn for the worse. Mrs. Milgrom has died. We inferred that she has died from typhus. To make matters worse, the Russians began dropping bombs on Warsaw during the funeral. People have become so desperate that the undertaker is charging people to get into the cemetery. Misha watched a young boy eat newspaper today, and Uncle Shepsel is going mad. Janina has connected this strange seed thingy (milkweed seeds) to angels. She has gathered a few, thinking she would release her mother's angel. Below is an open milkweed pod.
This is what a milkweed pod looks like before it opens. It gets its name from the milky white sap that oozes out. You can see it in the picture. Milkweed seed (close up)

~One Arm Olek was also lost today. He was caught smuggling, and really affected Janina and Misha. Mish discovered Uri working in a Jackboot hotel. What is he doing there? Is he really a Jew? Is he in the Resistance? Is he Russian? Is he German? Is he just doing this to survive? So many questions! I guess we will just have to finish it next week and find out. There will be no vocabulary, spelling list, or skill sheets next week. We are dedicating most of our time to finishing this novel. I wish the parents could see their children as we close reading every day. Everyone is so disappointed when we stop! Dylan makes the BEST Big Henryk, and Trenton is an awesome Uncle Shepsel.
