Accellerated Reader

~Accelerated Reader is up and running!  Many of the Gibbons and Goodman Apes have stopped in to take an AR Test.  An AR Test is a fairly easy test that a student takes after completing a book for accountability purposes.  They are not difficult.  If a student is scoring at 80% or higher, he or she definitely read the book!  if they are scoring below 70%, they most likely did not read the book, or the book is was way too difficult.  Congratulations to Kegan.... he took the very first AR test, and modeled AR procedures for the rest of the class!

Accelerated Reader is now up and running!  Big thanks to Mrs. Manabat for approving and purchasing it, and Mr. Priscott for helping to get our class set up!  First thing in the morning you can come in and take tests!  The more points you earn...the bigger the prizes!  Click on the link on the right to see AR prizes!  Before reading a book make sure it is at level 3.0 or higher.

Swim America

The dates for Swim America are September 8th, 10th, and 12th from 11:30-12:30  Please bring a lunch for our picnic after!  No child will be allowed into the pool without a signed permission slip.  Please remember your bathing suit and towel on these days.

Fun in Reading, Swim America, and PTA

~We are well into our first novel Maniac Magee!  He is no longer homeless thanks to the Beales.... He still has some major problems like a bully named Mars Bar... and his gang from the East End, and John McNab and the Cobras from the West End!  In Language we are learning some Latin roots like cent (100), bio (life), tri (3), bi (2), ped (foot), and uni (one) to help us dismantle and understand some complicated and difficult words like tricentennial.  We are also focusing on making inferences to help us figure out things that are not stated in the text.

~Our first week is almost compete, please make sure you join PTA.

~No students from Rooms 10 or 11 will be able to join the class for Swim America next month unless the green forms sent home on Wednesday are returned and signed.  Please note that we will also be having an afternoon picnic on each Swim America day.... so please pack a lunch!

Off and running.....

 ~We are off to an awesome start!  Today was our first "normal" day!  We are already on Chapter 5 in Maniac Magee.  Jeffrey was orphaned at age 3 and sent to live with his selfish and miserable Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan.  He becomes homeless and quits school at age 11!  We will find out over the next two weeks what life has in store for this "Maniac" kid.

Test: Wednesday August 27

legend - (noun) a story that cannot be proven, usually about a well known person, handed down by word of mouth.  Legends are loosely based on fact.  Paul Revere and Track Man are good examples.

legacy - (noun) what someone leaves behind that is not property or valuables.  It is more of an idea.  MLK’s legacy is racial equality.

myth - (noun) a traditional story that expresses the belief of a people usually involving Gods and heroes.  Myths are used to explain phenomenons of nature. 

lunging - (verb) moving forward quickly and suddenly

trolley - (noun) electrical or gas street cars

accurate - (adjective) on target; correct

infamous - (adjective) notorious; famous or well know for something BAD.

mirage - (noun) seeing something that is not there; hallucination
blemish - (noun) a bad mark; stain

finicky - (adjective) fussy; picky

~It was a pleasure meeting those of you who came to Friday's Meet & Greet!

~Our lunch time is at 11:40.  We eat most days in the classroom.  Feel free to join us.

~Our resource time is at 2:00. (this would be the best time to schedule medical appointments)

~We will do our best to have recess as often as possible...... 

~Read & Respond forms (the nightly homework) are the responsibility of the student.  If they lose them please do not write a note.  

~If you have not purchased classroom supplies yet...PLEASE DO NOT!  Thankfully, we have enough!

We will let you know what we need at Meet & Greet this Friday.  If you already purchased the items, hopefully you saved your receipt and can return the items.

~I ran the Shipyard Half Marathon in Portland, Maine with my sister-in-law Jennifer Gibbons! There were tons of hills and it was HOT!  Still had a blast!

Goodbye

It is with much sadness and reflection that Mr. Gibbons and Mrs. Goodman say goodbye to Beauclerc and embark on our new journey.... together!  We have many great memories of the students, parents, teachers and friends that we have both made at Beauclerc!  We wish everyone happiness, peace, and love in the coming days, months, and years.  Once an Ape...always an Ape!
