Roll of Thunder

~We finished reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry today.  This novel really painted a trued and accurate picture of what life was like for African American sharecroppers in the United States.  Their life was difficult, unfair, unpredictable, violent and there were rarely monetary rewards.  Although all of the sharecroppers in our novel were Black, many White southerners were also victims of the sharecropping system.

Rest in Peace

~Rest in peace Schmuel and Bruno......

Our new novel

~Look what we are reading!  Can you believe we are already on Chapter 3?  We met Kevin (a disabled yet brilliant 7th grader, and Max, an oversized angry misunderstood 7th grade orphan who lives in his grandparents basement.  The funny thing is...... Max the Giant is intimidated and scared of the undersized genius who needs crutches to drag himself around.

The end of Schmuel's Journey!

~Sadly, neither Bruno nor Schmuel made it out of Outwith.  The killing machine that Papa helped create ended up taking the life of his son and his best friend for life.  The two boys defined true friendship.  What an awesome story. Thank you John Boyne for writing this great fable!

Star Student

~Congratulations to Gae and Miguel!  They are this week's STAR Students.  Both boys set good examples and work hard every day!

Schmuel and Bruno

~We finally met the boy in the pajamas from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas!  Schmuel (pronounced Shmool) can hardly believe this German boy named Bruno can be naive as he is acting!  We can hardly wait to see how this friendship develops.

What a cool President!

Literacy Roundup!

~We are really grooving into The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (We are almost halfway!).  Mrs Janson; reading class is now reading Milkweed, let's hope they are loving it like we did! John Boyne really has a style of writing that we are not used to.  He likes to sue a lot of repetition: "out of bounds at al times, with no exceptions", "if I am being honest with myself, which I always like to be", "the hopeless case".  Mr Boyne also likes to write as if he was just sitting back and telling a story...so there is not a lot of interruption and stopping.... we call them run-ons!  The author is Irish, and there are a few words that sound the same but have a small difference in spelling: centre, colour, favourite, towne, etc.  We are enjoying the very typical relationship of an older sister and younger brother who rarely see eye to eye!

~In writing we are really focused on using elaboration to enhance our evidence!  We actual;ly had 8 Gibbons Apes score a 9 on last weeks "opinion" assessment!  Way to go!
