Another Novel!
~We finished another novel at school! We are reading at a record pace! Our goal at the beginning of the year was to read more books than any other fifth graders on Duval County! We are on our way to meeting that goal! You will be happy to know that over 95% of Denmark's Jews survived the Holocaust! Ellen and her family made it safely to Sweden and would return when the war was over! Sadly, Peter's work with the Resistance cost hm his life. he was executed by the Nazis. Even though Peter is a fictional character, Lows Lowry modeled him after Kim Malte Bruun, a real Danish Resistance fighter...he is pictured below. Cannot wait to see what Milkweed brings us during our Guided reading groups!

Life Before Jackie!
~We are learning about the harsh and unfair beginning of the Jackie Robinson and his family. We are then taking evidence from out text to support our thesis statements about life for "colored" people in America before Jackie Robinson became a professional athlete. Did you now Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals for America, yet restaurants in the South would not serve him. Joe Louis won the Heavy Weight Championship of the World yet he could not get a room in ahotel in most major American cities.
