We are going to miss you Marco!
~Last week, Marco left us! Mrs. Peck, Mrs. Goodman, and Mr. G were sad to see him go. We never got to give him a proper Ape Goodbye! We were so proud of the academic improvements that he made over the last 5 months, and made the Honor Roll! Make us proud at Arlington Heights Marco! You have three teachers over at Beauclerc that will be rooting for you and checking up on you!!!!!

Freak the Mighty
~If you haven't heard... we are currently reading Freak the Mighty as a class and in our small groups. It is an incredible story of two boys and how they come from two totally different backgrounds and from a friendship that is unbreakable. One of them is over 6 feet tall (Mighty), and overweight and labeled as "not smart" and the other has a condition that does not allow his body to grow (Freak), but he is a genius! Together they form their own imaginary Hero "Freak the Mighty". Mighty's Dad is in prison for murder, and Freak's Dad took off when he was born never to be heard from again. Both boys have to live with the social stigma of what their parents have done, and their own physical appearances. If you want to borrow a copy after we are done..... just come on by and pick one up. This is the first year the Apes have read Freak the Mighty, and it will be definitely in the rotation for next year.
Hope gets her first dose of how the Apes do "reading"
Thanks for the Valentines Day treats Mrs. Pickles!

Everyone has raved about the camp since it began two years ago. Below are some pictures of a couple of their weekly trips. The cost is $125 a week. Ape Ball
~After over a month of practicing, we began playing softball for real! It is amazing to see how much better they are now than when they were at the beginning of January! Seleishia and Dar'yn sure can smack that ball, and we are hoping for a cure of Robbie and Maggie's Itis... as in Homerunitis. The Apes are even learning at recess! If you have any old gloves at home that you no longer use, and would like to donate them... SEND THEM IN, we will use them! Boys play on Monday, and girls play on Tuesday...and we may even play on Wednesday a bit!!!!
~Maybe we will hit some Diet Cokers on Wed. or Thurs.

Freak the Mighty
~We started our gazillionth novel today.... Freak the Mighty! All I can say is WOW! This novel is engaging from the beginning. We covered five chapters... yes 5... on our first day, we could not put it down! Max lives with his grandparents who actually seem scared of him. They keep him down in the basement. He is the size of an adult... actually bigger than most adults, in the 7th grade. He has no friends, and fails everything he does. He finds a friend (we know him as Freak) who is smart, the size of a two year old, and who is also in 7th grade. We are really watching these character develop quickly, making incredible inferences, and seeing some great cause and effect relationships. You can;t help but feel for these two characters. Did you ever think READING would be this much fun? I can't wait to get back to Freak the Mighty tomorrow!
~Don't forget to bring in your $5 for your Ape shirt!
Where's Dar'yn?

Ape Eagle Scout
~Congratulations to former Gibbon Ape Taylor Schawang. He became an Eagle Scout yesterday. This is an accomplishment that very few people ever accomplish. He is in the same company as former U.S. President Gerald Ford, movie maker Steven Spielberg, and famous CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite. When Taylor entered middle school, most other boys dropped out of scouting due to peer pressure, sports, or other influences. Taylor stuck with it! This will help him get into more colleges, and when he enters the job market, being an Eagle Scout is a HUGE plus! We are all proud of you at Beauclerc Taylor!

We finished our Holocaust Unit
~We finished our Learning Unit on the Holocaust. Today we finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Shmuel and Bruno died together holding hands and supporting each other. Mrs. Peck and I hope that you learned a lot about the world in which we live, and how you, as one person can truly make a difference. Look what the people of Denmark did! We met Annemarie, Rachel, Ellen, Henryk, Misha, Janina, Big Henryk, One Armed Olek, Ferdi, Grey John, Bruno, Shmuel, Gretel, Uncle Shepsel, Korinna, Rita, Eva, and Uri. They were all heroes in their own way.
Hopefully they changed the way you think about yourself. Now you are a witness to what happened to 11 million people during World War 2. They were all innocent, and they need to be remembered. When you hear someone say that it did not happen (Deniers) you MUST speak up. Next month, we will be meeting a few survivors who will share their tale with you.
~Any parent who would like to borrow a copy of Number the Stars, Milkweed, or The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is welcome to come by and pick up a copy.
Can you find the differences in the pictures? There are many!
Crazy Hair Day 2011
Class Shirts
~Our class shirts are in! We are selling them to ALL Apes at below cost. The cost for each shirts is $5. The shirts will be kept in Rooms 71 and 73. Mrs. Goodman and Mr. G will wash them. At the end of the year, it's YOURS to keep! We ordered enough for all the students, it is first come first serve. Those who bring in their money first, will get first pick! Mr. G, Mrs. Peck, and Mrs. Goodman will be modeling them Monday! The shirts will be worn to all assemblies, trips, etc.
