We missed you today Ms. Verdene!
We have decided that Dylan and Madison are officially BUNNY HOGS!
Today your child brought home a cardboard display. This is for the visual presentation for their Living Museum project. There is no cost to your child for these display boards.
The middle part of the display is for the name of your child's subject and pictures or collages. One of the sides is for biographical information. The other is for the accomplishments of the subject. Your child is supposed to have fun with this assignment.
WRITING CONTEST
A colleague at another school made me aware of a holiday writing contest being held by The Florida Times Union. Your child has to write a narrative (story) using the 12 words provided. It must be at least 500 words but not more than 1,000.
Any student who participates will be given extra credit in Lang./Writing. One winner will be chosen from Room 71, and one from Room 73. Each winner will be awarded a valuable prize donated by an outside source. The Ape winner will be determined by an objective outside source. The winners will then be entered in the fifth grade school wide contest (one from each class). That winner will be entered into the newspaper contest. The overall winner will win cash from the Florida Times Union, and published in the paper! It is due to Mr. Gibbons by November 14.
The words that must be included in the narrative are:
nog
wreath
mistletoe
blizzard
kazoo
gingerbread
family
Alabama
puppy
stocking
roller coaster
Kermit the Frog
Have fun with this and use everything we have learned in Writer's Workshop!
END OF MONTH LUNCHEON IS AT 12:30 TOMORROW!
We will begin reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry at the end of next week. This story shows how the people of Denmark stood up to tyranny and saved over 95% of its Jews during the Holocaust.
We will be reading My Senator and Me starting next week also. This is the Book of the Month for November. Mr. Kennedy has served as a U.S. Senator for over 46 years. He is currently battling terminal brain cancer. He is the younger brother of John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Robert F. Kennedy (RFK).

Olivia and Cristian have already read their twenty five books...WOW!

WWI, and Welcome Bridey and Earlene
First of all, everyone in Room 71 met their reading goal for October! That means we can all come to the luncheon Friday! YAHOOOOO! There are still two students who are 2 books short of their 15 book goal for the year. I'm sure they will be caught up by the end of November! We have read collectively over 300 books as a class!
We started learning about the causes of The Great War today. Is it confusing or what? It sounds like a playground fight among 8 year olds! Hopefully the map below will help you see how close these countries are to each other. You will notice that on this map the Allied Powers (England, France, and Russia) are called Triple Entente. Can you figure out why most of the fighting took place in Germany, Belgium and France?
Europe in 1914
We also met Earlene and Bridey today! The kids great job of handling them, and treating them like God's creatures. Was Lauren excited today or what? Dylan, sorry about NO RATS! Joshua did a great job of handling them after school.
28 out of 40 Apes have responded to the CRASH poll. So far it looks like Penn is the favorite book character. There are only a few more days to vote!
Pictures of Bridey and Earlene will be posted tomorrow! Mr. G forgot his camera at school!

Spelling
Your new Spelling list is posted on the sidebar. These are words that are necessary to understand The Great War and the Treaty of Versailles? Huh? You will be experts on these subjects by the end of the week.
Lauren and Robbie's pictures never appeared on the blog when they were STAR Stuents. Sorry guys, better late than never!
Coming Soon:
(Franky and Thelma look like they just saw dessert!)
